If you're in your final year of sixth form there's probably only one thing on your mind: exams. And if you want to have that edge when the all important finals begin; then stay hydrated. Researchers have found that taking water into the examination hall may improve your grades. The findings come from a study of 447 psychology students by the universities of East London and Westminster. Controlling for ability from previous coursework results, they found that those with water scored an average of five per cent higher than those without. So if you want to boost your capacity to learn make sure you keep well hydrated throughout the day because when you are thirsty mental performance including memory, attention and concentration can decrease by about 10 per cent. Pupils' concentration is improved because they are not distracted by the effects of dehydration such as thirst, tiredness and irritability. One of the researchers, Dr Chris Pawson, from the University of East London, said that consuming water may have a physiological effect on thinking functions that lead to improved exam performance. He stated: "Water consumption may also alleviate anxiety, which is known to have a negative effect on exam performance. "Future research is needed to tease apart these explanations, but whatever the explanation it is clear that students should endeavour to stay hydrated with water during exams." Another researcher Dr Mark Gardner of the University of Westminster, commented: "Supplementing with water is a really cheap way students and educators can help get better results. "There are also implications for policy makers in terms of the availability of water on campuses." "It's important, therefore, that ensuring free access to water and promoting a regular water intake throughout the school day is a vital, and schools need to at the forefront of promoting health and providing a healthy learning environment."
