Cool water to help pupils think
|
 | When we are thirsty it has been shown that our mental performance including our memory, attention span and concentration may decrease by around 10%. In the case of younger people in a learning environment good hydration will reduce the tiredness, irritability and disorientation that thirst and deydration can cause. | Studies have found that children who are dehydrated do not work as well in the classroom as those who have drunk the recommended eight glasses of water a day. It has been widely documented that keeping hydrated can increase concentration, reduce fatigue and result in a more relaxed and productive environment.
The time has come to take the tap water out of the toiletsGood hydration is essential to children’s well being and yet in many schools, access to cool refreshing water is difficult and sometimes impossible. It has been shown that the effects of poor hydration through thirst, not only causes distress, but also headaches, continence problems and constipation and in the longer term even renal disease.
The national “Water is Cool in School Campaign” has been launched with the aim of improving the quality of provision and access to fresh drinking water for children in UK primary and secondary schools. For more information click www.healthedtrust.com
Hydration education researchA UK based bottled water manufacturer has recently completed a joint initiative with Morecambe Community High School (MCHS) to provide free water for a school project to test the benefits of drinking water among pupils. The results showed that there was a significant overall improvement in concentration levels.
Students were asked to drink 1.5 litres of water each day including weekends and along with their parents and teachers were all asked to complete a detailed questionnaire before and after the trial. The results showed a 48% of pupils noticing an improvement in concentration levels along with 42% noticing a positive improvement in their level of excitability and 38% feeling their anger control had improved.
In June 2008, Yorkshire Water funded a pilot project where water coolers were put into three schools in Leeds. It was noticed that there was a significant increase in the quantity of water the children drank because the water from a nearby cooler was fresh and chilled. With the support of head teachers the company plans to put coolers in every primary school in Yorkshire over the next three years.
